Despite the lack of previous models to analyse, the Kumho Ecsta PS71 stands out as a reliable performer in the tyre market. Manufactured by Kumho, it flaunts an impressive 77% rating from our tests. It is a summer tyre, offering excellent performance in dry and wet conditions. According to ACE, where it competed against 10 other tyres, the PS71 ranked 7th, excelling specifically in 'Aquaplaning - longitudinal'. Comparatively, in Autobild's test out of 50 tyres, the PS71 came at 12th. In terms of performance, the ACE 2023 summarised that the Kumho Ecsta PS71 has a good balance of high performance potential, and good handling qualities with short wet and dry braking distances, however, it did mention increased noise during driving.
On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, a successor to the popular Pilot Sport 4 and 3, seems to have carved its own place in the tyre market. The tyre, manufactured by Michelin, received an outstanding rating of 99% in our tests. This UUHP (Ultra High-Performance) summer tyre was held up against the same tests as the PS71 and emerged third in ACE's series, exhibiting particular strength in 'Aquaplaning - cross'. Furthermore, in Autobild's examination of 50 tyres, Michelin's variable came out strong at sixth. The ACE 2023 summarised that the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is a sports tyre with precise steering and excellent driving dynamics, performs well in aquaplaning reserves, and has short wet and dry braking distances. However, it is more expensive in comparison to the Kumho PS71.
To summarise, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 surpasses the Kumho Ecsta PS71 in overall tests, offering better grippage and superior performance in various conditions. However, this high performance comes at a higher cost. Conversely, the Kumho Ecsta PS71 provides a rational balance between performance and price, making it a commendable alternative for those on a budget.
