Today we are looking at Michelin Pilot Sport 5 and Bridgestone Potenza Sport, both renowned for outstanding performance in tyre tests.

Starting with the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, a successor to Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and 3, pocketing a solid 97% rating from us. Notable strengths include its durability, providing the longest tread life among tested tyres, and consistent performance across various conditions. It also stood out for having the lowest eco impact. However, this tyre, despite its excellent properties, comes at a higher cost and could use better wet grip. The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 has yet not been replaced by a newer model. This tyre shone particularly in Aquaplaning - cross, Dry handling, and Wear tests.

Next, we have the Bridgestone Potenza Sport earning an 89% score from our side. Made in Poland and Hungary, it showcased considerable grip in wet conditions and a sporty feel, posting the fastest lap time among its competitors. It also had excellent wet braking, both new and worn. However, it came up short in the cooler wet braking test and showed significant wear after three laps on a tough circuit, indicating potential longevity issues. Additionally, it struggled in the aquaplaning tests and possessed a high rolling resistance. Against this backdrop, it proved to be the worst value, costing over 30% more per kilometer than the best in the test. This tyre stood out in Dry braking, Dry handling - objective, Wet handling, Wet handling - objective, and many others.

When put head to head in mutual tests, Michelin Pilot Sport 5 often took a slight edge. It ranked 3rd against Bridgestone's 4th in Ace and Autobild tests but fell behind Bridgestone in Autozeitung, where it took the 5th place against Bridgestone's 2nd. Autobild 2023 praised the Michelin for its dynamic handling, agility, precise steering, aquaplaning safety, short wet braking distances, good comfort, and quiet rolling noise but criticized its high price level. The Bridgestone was lauded for its excellent handling, good balance, precise steering with good feedback, short wet and dry braking distances but criticized for its high rolling resistance and average comfort.

In summary, Michelin Pilot Sport 5 shines for its longevity and eco-friendliness, but its high price might deter some users. In contrast, Bridgestone Potenza Sport excels in wet conditions and provides a sporty feel, but potential longevity issues and high rolling resistance could prove significant drawbacks. Both have numerous advantages and a few weak points, and the choice would depend on your particular needs and preferences.
